VGI utilizes a Fixed Wireless system for the majority of our wireless internet products.
Fixed wireless is the operation of wireless devices or systems used to connect two fixed locations (e.g., building to building or tower to building) with a radio or other wireless links 8-10 miles away and sometimes further.
Usually, fixed wireless is part of a wireless LAN infrastructure. The purpose of a fixed wireless link is to enable data communications between the two sites or buildings. Fixed wireless data links are often a cost-effective alternative to leasing fiber or installing cables between the buildings.
Point-to-point signal transmissions occur through the air over a terrestrial microwave platform rather than through copper or optical fiber; therefore, fixed wireless does not require satellite feeds or local telephone service.
The advantages of fixed wireless include the ability to connect with users in remote areas without the need for laying new cables and the capacity for broad bandwidth that is not impeded by fiber or cable capacities. Fixed wireless devices usually derives their electrical power from the public utility mains and Co-Ops.
Fixed wireless services typically use a directional radio antenna on each end of the signal (e.g., on each building/home) and these antennas are designed for outdoor use. Several types of radio antennas are available that accommodate various weather conditions, signal distances and bandwidths.
Radio are selected to make the beam as narrow as possible and thus focus transmit power to their destination, increasing reliability and reducing the chance of eavesdropping or data injection.
The links are usually arranged as a point-to-point setup to permit the use of these antennas. This also permits the link to have better speed and or better reach for the same amount of power.
Fixed Wireless is based on Line of Sight system (no tree, buildings, hills or obstructions) in order to provide the highest quality signal and throughput of service. Any of the mentioned obstructions can interfere or even eliminate an adequate service signal.
How is the service wired into my home or business?
VGI Technology will do a thorough survey of signal and determine the best possible radio antenna placement on the building and then professionally mount a radio antenna on the eave, roof, chimney or other fixture of your building.
We will then run an outdoor shielded CAT5 wire into your home through a single wall penetration or by using a previous source of entry that already exists in your home such as duct, prior cable, phone or satellite TV install location.
This cable will be run to a single computer or wireless router. Any extensive cabling or routing in attics will require additional labor charges.
We do our best to not have to drill into your buildings walls or roof unless absolutely necessary and we get very creative and have a wealth of experience with all kinds of different building compositions, roofs and location scenarios.
We ask that you trust our recommendations and what is required to establish the best service possible. If you absolutely do not approve of the requirements for service then we will terminate the installation and there would be no further agreement or obligation on your part.
